(One member of the background ensemble, by the way, is Ledyard native Kyle E. This tale of the lives and loves of the performers working on a Mississippi-River show boat is played out by a cast that's among the finest Goodspeed has put together. The production moves with confidence, navigating the decades-spanning storyline gracefully.

Tackling this sweeping work couldn't have been easy, but the result plays beautifully. The director has been the guiding force behind some of Goodspeed Musicals' best productions of the past few years ("Annie Get Your Gun," "Camelot," "Big River," "1776"), and he continues that oh-so-admirable trend with "Show Boat." If there's one thing I've learned as a Goodspeed audience member, it's this: Rob Ruggiero can do no wrong. The Goodspeed production of “Show Boat” succeeds on all fronts, including the joyful choreography by Noah Racey.
